Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who is eligible to apply?

    Applications will be accepted from undergraduate students who are in good academic standing and are currently enrolled at a four year college or university. Women and underserved populations are encouraged to apply.

  2. How will applicants be selected?

    Applicants will be chosen through a Selection Committee. Several faculty members (from Pittsburgh MIDAS Community) along with the Education and Project Coordinators will review applications.

  3. What criteria will the Selection Committee use?

    Committee members base their recommendations on criteria stated below (note these criteria are not listed in order of importance): 
    • Applicant personal statement (to help us evaluate the student's motivation(s), personal fit for participation in our program)
    • Academic standing (grade point average) 
    • Academic transcript 
    • Applicant Resume/CV
    • Letters of Recommendation (2)

  4. What is the level of financial support awarded by MIDAS?

    A $4500 stipend will be provided to participants for the ten week program.

  5. What are the important dates for the program?

    Application Deadline: February 24, 2014

    Notification of Acceptance: March 27, 2014

    Program Duration: May 19 - July 25, 2014

  6. Is there any flexibility with start or end dates for the program?

    Yes, there is some flexibility in the start and/or end dates for the program. Please discuss individual requirements with the MIDAS Education and Outreach Coordinator.

  7. If I attend school outside of western Pennsylvania, can I still apply to the program?

    Yes. Applicants outside of western Pennsylvania can apply. Housing and travel will be provided as needed.
